Choosing the Perfect Comforter Set

What is a Comforter Set?

A comforter set is a package including a comforter and varying items that match it. At the less accessorized end, you might find a set with a comforter and two pillowcases or pillow shams. You can find practically all of your fabric item needs for your bedroom in one set!

How Does a Comforter Set Differ from a Bed in a Bag?

When you buy a bed in a bag, you generally get a fitted sheet, a twin sheet, two pillowcases, and a comforter. And, indeed, some comforter sets include just those items, too, so there is some overlap between a comforter set and a bed in a bag. However, comforter sets can include more, even up to 14 pieces!

One of the wonderful things about comforter sets is that the same number of items is generally available from twin all the way up to California king sets. Even if you are buying a comforter set for a twin bed, you can still find one with decorative pillows and pillow shams to suit your design desires and needs.

Why Buy a Set?

Is your bedroom just a place to sleep? Of course not. It is an expression of you. It may be the truest expression of your innermost self, in fact. You spend more time in your bedroom than you spend almost anywhere else - up to a third of your life, in fact. Your bedroom needs to reflect who you truly are, and you are probably more complicated than the impression conveyed by just two sheets, two pillowcases, and a comforter.

A comforter set can tie everything in your room together, from pillows to drapes. All will be in the same pattern or complementing patterns.

Here are some items you might find in a set:

  • Comforter (of course)
  • Duvet cover
  • Bed skirt (also known as a dust ruffle)
  • Fitted sheet
  • Flat sheet
  • Throw
  • Pillowcases or pillow shams
  • Decorative pillows
  • Euro shams for the decorative pillows
  • Bolster pillow
  • Drapes

When you order a comforter set, you can get up to six decorative pillows of different sizes - all matching or complementing each other! Try buying all those matching pieces separately! First you have to find them and make sure they really do match, lugging your comforter all around different stores to make sure that the shades are just right. Then you have to buy them, which is a lot of fuss and usually costs more than buying them in a set.

In the comforter set that you choose, there might be only two matching decorative pillows, but there could be up to six of them. And they come in different sizes, creating a wonderful cascade effect on your bed. What a welcome your bedroom will give you after a long, tiring day!

Some of the pillows might come with Euro shams, 26" by 26" to put on 20" by 20" pillows. Some might just be made with the fabric of the entire set. That's all right; decorative pillows don't get dirty the way that your standard pillows do.

Guest Rooms

Your guests will feel so pampered when you show them into their room and everything looks gorgeous! They will be sure that you spent a great deal of time and trouble (not to mention money!) making sure that all of the exquisite pieces coordinated so well. Let them sing your praises as a decorator. Just smile to yourself. You know how you achieved this master stroke; why let the cat out of the bag?

Entertaining

When you have a party, do you feel a little ashamed of how plain your bedroom looks? Does it reflect well on you? A comforter set will tie up every last detail to the admiration of everybody who visits, from Great-Aunt Matilda to your children's soccer teammates. You know they're going to sneak a look at your room even if the door is closed; why not give them a pleasant surprise?

Save yourself time, money, and aggravation; make your bedroom not just more restful but a place to be proud of. Accessorize your bedroom with a comforter set!
